Michael Lakey Profile

Michael’s love of horses began at the age of fourteen when living in Wagga Wagga NSW he gained weekend employment with now Gold Coast Trainer Barry Bowditch.

Moving back to his hometown Brisbane when he was 15, Michael became an apprentice jockey to Deagon Trainer Geoff Burns. Michael enjoyed a successful career as a country jockey before the battle to keep his weight to a minimum got the better of him.

He was successful in gaining employment at Lindsay Park in Adelaide as a trackwork rider.  Colin Hayes was a master at his game and the training skills Michael learnt there were invaluable.

After several years at Lindsay Park family ties pulled him back to Queensland. Michael obtained his Trainer’s Licence in 1999, his career highlight so far is winning the Listed 2004 Goldmarket Handicap with Uncle Shamos.

With around 24 horses in the stable at any one time, Michael enjoys being a hands on trainer, paying close attention to each individual horse.
